Description

Based upon a variety of primary sources, this course will explore why and how the apparently secure world suddenly collapsed in 1989. Topics will include: the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe in 1989; the fall of Communism in the Balkans in 1989; the Kremlin, the German Question, and East Germany's Dissolution; German Unification on the International Agenda; German Unification: Internal Processes; Soviet Consent to German Unification, the Birth of the 2+4 process; Soviet Dis-Union: The Baltics and Russia; The Moscow coup and the end of the Soviet Union; Explanations and interpretation on the end of the Cold War; The World the Cold War made.
